Arsenal was knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the semi-final stage on Thursday evening following a goalless draw with Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium
The Gunners were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in the second leg of their semi-final clash with the Spanish side, meaning they lost the tie 2-1 on aggregate following last week's first leg at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
On what turned out to be a mostly uneventful evening in north London, Arsenal had chances to bring the ball in the net in their pursuit of the target they so desperately desired, but their attempts were futile.
After rising highest to connect with Hector Bellerin's cross, striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had the best chance of the match when his close-range header hit the inside of the post after he didn't start the first leg in Spain last week.
Arsenal, on the other hand, were unable to find a way through, prompting former Gunners star Keown to give a scathing critique after the final whistle.
The former Arsenal center-back slammed the club's corporate practices while also pointing out how Emery got the best of his successor.
"I think there were only four (shots on target) in both ties," Keown told BT Sport. "Villarreal was in command of the tactics, while Emery, in my opinion, was too intelligent for Arteta.
"Hugely disappointing, they were anxious and hesitant, the result was lacking, and we shouldn't be shocked given their Premier League place, ninth in the table, and 19 goals scored in 17 home matches.
"It's been a wild ride this season, and inconsistency is rampant in the squad.
"I believe the manager is under a lot of pressure. You begin to question the wisdom of a young manager coming here to take on a big job at this football club. Maybe his inexperience has cost him."
Arsenal's Europa League exit means they face an uphill battle in their remaining four Premier League games just to secure a place in Europe next season, with their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League already dead and buried.
In addition, Arteta would be carrying a lot of weight on his back because this was a lost opportunity.
Keown added, assessing Arteta's future: "He's still here as manager, so we'll have to see what happens there.
"But it seemed to me that this was the rescue kit for tonight, and it didn't come, the team didn't show up, whether it was the inspiration, the strategy - he was outsmarted by the previous boss, which is also an embarrassment.
"Both games, the false nine and today, when we fully changed our midfield and it seemed as though it was brand new to us, it didn't seem as if we had the ability to adapt and change. We seemed befuddled.
"They engaged us high up the mound, we couldn't get out, we appeared a little nervous, and it encouraged them to play and be at ease. The thing is, we haven't really put a glove on them, and we haven't gone down fighting.
"They wouldn't be able to get away with it if the stadium was packed.
"They almost seemed ready to let the game fade away; I believe it comes from the manager; he gives the tactics at the outset, and it's the foundation for the players to play from."
